Today, we again got up at a reasonable hour and viewed some beautiful Birds of Paradise.
Alex and Mike took us to a great bakery for breakfast. I had a poached egg on freshly baked French bread with melted Brie and ham. Sarah had corn cakes with tomato, pesto, ham and a poached egg. Both were absolutely wonderful. South Africans have great chefs!
We were picked up at the City Lodge at Lynwood Bridge hotel by a taxi and were shuttled over to the Glen Afric Reserve and farm. Glen Afric is a rescue shelter/reserve for African game animals that are sick and need to be rehabilitated. However, once the animals are brought to the reserve, they don't leave; they have gotten too used to humans and would be a danger to people and themselves if they were re-introduced into the wild.
We were shown to our room, which turned out to be a private lodge out by the animal stables. The roof is actually made from thatch! The inside of the lodge is massive. You could put a whole bell choir inside for rehearsal and have space for people to sleep on the second floor.
After unpacking, we headed over to the main building and fed the elephants. There are three at the reserve; Three is the mother, Hannah is Three's biological daughter and Marty is Three's adopted daughter. We fed them their favorite snack, carrots.
Afterwards, Bernise, our guide and ranger while we're at the reserve, took us to meet the elephants. We were thinking that we would meet the through the fences, but no.... We got close and personal.
Off to lunch and to meet the other volunteers. We met Lucy from Holland, Rolf and his girl friend from Norway, Chris from France, Cecile from Denmark and Marta from Bulgaria. Sarah and I are the only ones from the US. Everyone wants to talk with us to practice their English and learn the proper way to speak American slang.
Going out on a tour of the bar facilities tonight with Rolf, Chris and Cecile! We'll keep you posted.
