Well, the trip is finally on the go. Last night we stayed in a hotel by the airport because of our early departure. Got a bumpy start this morning morning when i realized at the airport I left my iPhone in the hotel room. Went back, got a new key and searched the room only to realize I had packed the phone in my suitcase so I wouldn't forget it. Sigh...
We started at 5:30am on Aug 1, 2013; flew 5 hours to Washington, DC, then 17 hours to South Africa.
International Terminal in Washington, DC |
Touch down! Landed in Johannesburg. Our hosts, Alex and Michael picked us up and we took off to Pretoria, and After a shower, we enjoyed a wonderful home cooked meal.

Then Alex said it was time for a walk around her "hood". An hour and a half later... OK - we were sitting on a plane since 8:00 AM Thursday to 5:00 PM Friday - out legs needed to get their circulation back.
Alex's "hood" is a gated community with an adjacent game reserve - honestly, we crossed a "game gate" (Oregonians call them cattle gates) in the middle of a neighborhood with million dollar homes. Kind of like having a home on a gold course back home. Alex was disappointed that we didn't see any oryx laying down on one of the front yards.
Well, it's time to lay down and get ready for a museum tour - Cradle of Humankind and other adventures Alex and Mike have up their sleeves.
