I got the list of shots that I need to get for the trip. Holy Cow! Seven vaccinations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, Polio, Tetanus, Pertussis, Yellow Fever, and Hepatitis A has two doses and Hepatitis B has three. Ugh! The nurse gave me four in one arm and three in the other. Seriously painful! The nurse said that I shouldn't drinks any water because I'd leak like a sprinkler.
So the biggie shot is the Yellow Fever. South Africa is very paranoid about yellow fever. Considering that every country that surrounds South Africa has large outbreaks, I can understand. I would be paranoid too.
Anyways, I found out that when you travel out of South Africa, if you don't have the yellow fever vaccinations, they won't let you back in. I read about some travelers that went to Victoria falls in Zambia. They returned to South Africa to catch their flight back to the US, however, the South African government wouldn't let them back in. They missed their flight and were stranded.
So, back to my shots. I don't want to be stranded, so I'll sacrifice and endure the pain. I got my official WHO (World Health Organization) Yellow Fever vaccination. I think it's totally ironic that the vaccination card is bright yellow. I don't know where I will be going while I'm in South Africa. I have a travel agent working on that. As soon as I know what the itinerary is, I'll post it.
